The access gangway is designed to provide convenient and safe access for the operator to a railcar or tank truck from the rack. The access gangway can be either permanently fixed to the rack or equipped with a special mechanism that allows it to move freely along the rack. This is necessary when tank cars of various types are present in a single rail convoy. The distance the gangway can travel is limited only by the length of the rack itself.
The gangway can be operated by a single operator. To facilitate handling, it is equipped with two spring balancers and a parking position lock. The gangway is lifted manually by the operator using a cable.
