The folding downpipe is typically used in top unloading standpipes when the tank car has a large internal diameter, making it impossible to use a telescopic downpipe. The folding downpipe consists of a main pipe, a folding pipe, and two PST joints. The downpipe length is selected specifically for each tank car type.
The folding pipe unfolds inside the tank under its own weight due to the PST joint; lifting the pipe is performed manually by the operator using chains included in the kit. The folding downpipe is manufactured exclusively from stainless steel.
