Introduction: Two Approaches to Signal Protection

Twisted pair is the most widespread type of cable for local networks, IP‑telephony and video surveillance. When building an SCS, the engineer has to choose between classic unshielded UTP and products with metal barriers: F/UTP, SF/UTP. The first — U/UTP — contains no metal shells around the pairs at all, relying solely on the symmetry of the twist. The second — add foil, and in higher versions also a braid, creating a continuous conductive layer that diverts interference.

The difference in design radically changes the installation conditions. An ordinary cable without protective coverings is simple to crimp with a plain plastic connector; it is flexible and cheap. Models with foil and braid require earthing, special connectors and patch panels. At the same time, in a noisy environment — near inverters, power lines — only they are able to ensure a stable gigabit link. Screen Design: What the Letters Stand For

The designation of a twisted pair according to the ISO/IEC 11801 standard consists of two parts: overall protection of all pairs / individual protection of each pair. U/UTP — no metal coverings. F/UTP — a wrap of aluminium foil, a tinned drain wire along the entire length. SF/UTP — foil plus a tinned copper braid over it. The presence of foil radically changes the behaviour of the line in electromagnetic fields. It reflects high‑frequency interference, preventing it from penetrating inside. The braid additionally suppresses low‑frequency magnetic interference and increases the mechanical tensile strength. But all these layers turn into an antenna if they are not earthed. Therefore, a design with metal barriers is inextricably linked to the earthing infrastructure of the entire facility. If there is none, a pair with foil may perform worse than an ordinary unshielded one.

Noise Immunity in Practice

A twisted pair without metal coverings relies on symmetrical signal transmission. The interference arrives at both conductors of the pair in common mode and is subtracted by the differential receiver. In a typical office or apartment, where the power wiring is separated by the standard 125 mm, this is sufficient for gigabit speed without losses. But if a power cable of a powerful drive or inverter is laid nearby, the interference level exceeds the suppression threshold, and errors begin.

A line with F/UTP foil solves the problem: the external field induces a current in the foil, and the drain wire diverts it to earth, not letting it inside. The double protection of SF/UTP is effective even near transformers, welding machines and traction substations. In combination with correct earthing, such a pair provides a BER of no worse than 10⁻¹⁰ in the most unfavourable environment. Installation and Mandatory Earthing

Working with an unshielded twisted pair is simple and forgives many flaws. The sheath is removed, the pairs are straightened, crimping — and the line is ready. The cable is flexible, easily placed in ducts and grooves. F/UTP requires carefulness: when stripping, it is important not to damage the foil, then extract the drain wire and attach it to the metal housing of the connector. The patch panel or outlet must have earthing terminals, and the telecommunications busbar — a reliable connection to the building loop.

Models with SF/UTP braid are even more rigid to handle. Here the foil and braid are earthed together, often using special clamps in cross‑connects. The bending radius for lines with protective coverings is greater — usually 6–8 diameters, and for SF/UTP it can reach 10. If the wire is bent too sharply, the foil cracks, the braid deforms, and the continuity of the barrier is broken — at this point it ceases to perform its function. For outdoor routes, earthing is also necessary to drain static charges and lightning surges; surge protection devices are often installed together with the cable.

Price, Weight and Dimensions

The most affordable item is U/UTP. It is lighter, takes up less space in cable ducts, and a 305 m coil costs noticeably less. With a large number of ports, the savings translate into significant amounts. F/UTP is 20–30 % more expensive, and SF/UTP — 40–60 % more, and to the price of the wire itself are added the costs of shielded connectors, patch panels, outlets and earthing work. In an ordinary office building, these investments do not pay off.

However, when the cable is laid next to a frequency converter or on a gantry with power lines, the additional expenses are justified. Network downtime or data loss costs more. In addition, protected versions are heavier and thicker: fewer fit into a standard 25‑mm corrugated conduit, and the load on trays increases. All this must be taken into account at the project stage.

When an Ordinary Twisted Pair Is Sufficient

  • Apartments and private houses: there are no sources of strong interference, routes are short.
  • Offices with ordinary office equipment, provided the clearance from power wiring is observed.
  • Facilities without earthing infrastructure: there is no point in using F/UTP if there is nowhere to earth it.
  • Projects with a limited budget and a large number of workplaces.

When a Protective Layer Is Indispensable

  • Production workshops with inverters, variable‑frequency drives, arc welding.
  • Routes in common trays with power cables, where it is impossible to ensure the standard separation.
  • Outdoor lines and IP cameras: F/UTP or SF/UTP protect against static interference and lightning surges.
  • Medical and measurement laboratories, where a low level of radiation both outwards and inwards is required.
  • Power facilities and railway infrastructure with an extreme EM environment.

Typical Mistakes in Selection and Laying

  • Buying F/UTP without organising earthing. The protection effectiveness drops, sometimes the signal is worse compared to U/UTP.
  • Crimping lines with foil with simple plastic connectors — the drain wire is not connected, the metal layer hangs in the air.
  • Sharply bending wires with protective coverings with a small radius, leading to tearing of the foil and braid.
  • Laying an unshielded pair in one tray with a power feeder without a partition. The network degrades, FCS errors appear.
  • Saving on the category: Cat5e is used instead of Cat6 on long sections, and even good protection does not compensate for the increased attenuation.
