Cable Joint Testing Has Become More Realistic: New Device from NRU “MPEI”

Cable joints are the unseen heroes of power systems. They are responsible for the reliable connection of high‑voltage lines. But how can one be sure that a joint will withstand everything: voltage surges, vibration, temperature fluctuations and mechanical loads? Until recently, this was not a simple task. Engineers at NRU “MPEI” have created a device that accurately simulates real operating conditions, allowing a joint to be tested even before it is installed on a line.

The development resembles an artificial high‑voltage cable. Inside there is a metal conductor, a layer of insulation and a semi‑conductive coating. Everything is like a real cable. The test device reproduces the combined loads that occur in the most critical zones — especially at the transition point from the cable to the joint. This is precisely where problems most often arise due to increased electrical stress and mechanical pressure.

The new system is suitable for a wide range of joint sizes. This means that manufacturers and power engineers will be able to check any connections before they are installed in a real network. The result is higher quality, fewer failures and safe operation of equipment.

NRU “MPEI” Rector Nikolay Rogalev emphasised: “The creation of this device is an important step in the development of the domestic cable industry. It will make it possible to improve the quality and safety of high‑voltage networks, which aligns with the tasks of modernising Russia’s energy infrastructure.”

The development was headed by Aleksandr Filippov, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Physics and Technology of Energy Materials and Composites of NRU “MPEI”. Serial production has already been set up at the “Izolyator‑VV” plant. Now testing of cable accessories is moving to a new level — one that is as close as possible to reality.
